produced somewhere between a basement in brussels and an attic in the outskirts of paris, back when tape reel to reels, primitive rhythm boxes and analogue synths still carried a vague promise of the future, this music translated a certain atomic paranoia fuelled by the cold war industry. lo-fi music, abrasive, high pressure, dense, clipped to the max, like it was intended to punish any woofer that gets between it and the air.

after the success of the first release by ivan iacobucci, holic trax sublabel monoklo now enlists berlin-based martin lewis for three hot tracks featuring a remix from label boss man and japanese don tomoki tamura. no nonsense opener the wax is a supple, rubbery roller with sparse stabs accompanying the infectious groove. -poetry- then sinks down into a more warming and human groove, with smeared synths bringing colour and heat to a loose house groove, before lewis shows his skills at choppy techno with drumcatch. tomoki tamura also remixes this latter track, stripping it right back to a suggestive, infectious final groove with feather light percussion, skewed chords and involving sub bass that laps at the heels of the track.

ruhig comes back after one year with particles ep as first installment of a double ep on midgar. the record opens with particles, an atmospheric detroit influenced cut made out of synthlines dropping like voodoo spells, epic pads and fragmented beats. eddying follows up with a more direct approach to the dancefloor, 4/4 stomping beat and thin hi-hats backed by lasers and passionate ambiances. etere on the b-side gives the records an halfway breath, sounds like a late afternoon walk in the fields of a southern countryside village (with constructions going on somewhere nearby), before to start again with the sweet and eerie perle, where droney pinching drums are flooded by a swarm of dreamy fireflies. idiom to close the ep with a fast syncopated cut, showing the approach of ruhig to any form of musical expression and genre, far from traditional ambient or deep techno and going further, to reach out daring and more demanding levels.

mikkel metal was the first artist on echocord, and the main reason why the label was started back then. after many many releases we are very happy and proud that he now returns with a full lenght album. more than 7 years after his last long-player album mikkel metal returns with a new album for echocord. bypassing dub-techno as the starting point, this is music clearly consistent with earlier output. we are presented with 10 tracks that all evolve with around a melancholic melodic framework. while there is clearly a nod to detroit and another to dub- techno, the overall impression is consistently and unmistakably the sound of mikkel metal. a hypnotic, very enjoyable and thorough return from the danish artist.

releasing an album is a daunting task, especially in dance music. you got to keep it fresh and exciting from the very beginning until the last track, not sticking to one tempo, make tracks that work both at home and in the club and ultimately tell a story with your music. alexander lay-far knows a thing or two about this, having his debut album so many ways out back in 2013. the thing with lay-far and a big reason why we ve always had a soft spot for him is his way of incorporating a certain magic in the tracks that leaves you on an uplifting and optimistic note. therefore we re really excited to release his second album, how i communicate, on local talk. how i communicate is a two part vinyl release which we hope will come as a fresh breeze in these days where so much dance music simply lacks the actual musical aspect or the organic approach. like most producers and djs that are influenced by soul, disco, jazz and the blacker side of electronic dance music its all about the actual tune . listening (or dancing) through this album we hope you ll find your special tune (or tunes!) that hopefully will bring joy to your ears. to his aid lay-far has invited an impressive cast of collaborators such as ashley beedle & darren morris, restless soul, sean mccabe & mark de clive-lowe to give the tracks that little extra something under the watchful eye of lay-far himself. or as lay-far describes it himself the album is about the music as the universal language, the ultimate means of communication, bringing people of the world together. part 2 will be released in the new year...

ruff daft returns, and after a various artist ep for number 7, number 8 on the label goes back to the founder, with three new tracks from cottam washed out kicks things off, at the cross roads between mood hut & basic channel where dub techno sensibilities meet dreamy chords for a delectable deep house track. horns harks back to cottam s earliest releases, with an afro-ish horn loop teased out over four minutes until the full loop and bass kick in to devastating effect. a ruff draft sees cottam look back towards his techno roots, with a killer kick drum and raw acid lending an abrasive edge to a well rounded ep of varied styles.
after the late nite, neon-red funk of his last release the digital fantasy (which picked up support from the likes of benji b, alexander nut & ross allen), quaid returns with a new ep: cfe. ain contrast to the strung out, hazy eroticism of the digital fantasy, here the heart rate has elevated and the signals pushed further into the red nightlyfe best illustrates this with its rough hats, minor chords and irrepressible rhythm. body forms is a nod back to the hydraulic, locked funk of quaid s previous releases, whilst tango offers huerco s style synths under subverted prince housequake-era drums.a 99percent weaves around a driving bass algorithm and the insistent vocal refrain supplied by longtime collaborator dziko.atheres a change in mood here, the night has passed and sunrise is moments away. lights on tomorrows horizon glint endless glass, dust and chrome.

back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history melodiya, many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called magnitizdat (short of magnetic tape release). it began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. in the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj s mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. plus seven records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.
